What Exactly is Trauma?

And How Can it Affect You?

Dr Bessel Van Der Kolk Trauma Expert Bio Image

“Trauma is not the story of something that happened back then, but the current imprint of that pain, horror, and fear living inside [the individual].”
Dr bessel Van Der Kolk

Trauma is not in the event itself, but how our mind and body responds to the event or series of events. Trauma is not only defined by a major catastrophic disturbing event. Trauma can occur when we experience something stressful once, or over a period of time, that overloaded our capacity to cope, such as a neglectful or emotionally abusive caretaker, or something or someone that was repeatedly stressful to our system. Often, this trauma continues to be emotionally challenging in our current life, even though we may not be clearly aware of its effects on our system, on our relationships, and on our lives.

“Trauma compromises our ability to engage with others by replacing patterns of connection with patterns of protection.”
Dr stephen porges

Unresolved and untreated trauma can lead to many mental and physical health issues that are rife in today’s world, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, suicidality, chronic illnesses, chronic fatigue and many more.

It can also affect the way we function in day to day life and interact with others, hampering our ability to regulate our emotions, and often leading us to develop harmful coping mechanisms such as substance use disorders, eating disorders, self harm and more.

The important thing to realise, is that if you suspect you are experiencing trauma, you are not alone, and that trauma is treatable.

"Trauma-related symptoms always reflect adaptations that helped our clients to survive."
