NHS Funding for Treatment at Khiron Clinics
Can the NHS fund private mental health treatment at Khiron?
Khiron Clinics has historically received funding from approximately 50 NHS Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) across England for specialist trauma treatment.
This means there is an established precedent for NHS-funded private treatment at Khiron, but funding is always considered on an individual basis and cannot be guaranteed. Khiron cannot approve or influence the final funding decision, which sits with the relevant NHS commissioner.
What we can do is help you understand the process and provide the clinical information your NHS team may need when considering whether to request NHS funding for trauma treatment at Khiron Clinics.
How does NHS funding for private mental health treatment work?
The route you take will depend on whether you are already receiving care from an NHS mental health team.
In our experience, applications are more likely to progress when an NHS psychiatrist, Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) or other secondary mental health professional supports the clinical need for specialist treatment and is willing to approach the relevant ICB for funding.
If you already have an NHS mental health team
Step 1: Speak to your NHS clinician
Talk to your psychiatrist, Community Mental Health Team (CMHT), care coordinator or other NHS mental health professional about Khiron.
Ask whether they believe specialist trauma treatment may be clinically appropriate for you and whether they would be willing to support a request for NHS funding.
Step 2: Arrange an assessment with Khiron
A Khiron clinician can assess your individual needs and establish whether treatment with us is clinically appropriate.
Where treatment at Khiron is recommended, we will provide an individual treatment recommendation that can help your NHS team understand the proposed treatment and clinical rationale.
Step 3: We prepare your individual NHS Funding Pack
Following your assessment, where treatment at Khiron is recommended, we can prepare an individual NHS Funding Pack to support discussions with your NHS team.
This includes your Khiron assessment and treatment recommendation, alongside a supporting funding letter with relevant information about the proposed treatment.
Step 4: Share the Funding Pack with your NHS team
You can provide your Funding Pack to your psychiatrist, CMHT, care coordinator or other relevant NHS mental health professional.
With your consent, Khiron can also communicate directly with your NHS professionals and provide any additional clinical, service or costing information they require.
Step 5: Your NHS team approaches your ICB
If your NHS team agrees that treatment at Khiron is clinically appropriate, they can use the information provided to support a request for ICB funding.
Your responsible Integrated Care Board will then consider the request and make the final decision about whether NHS funding will be provided.
Funding is not guaranteed and every request is considered individually.
What if I don't currently have an NHS mental health team?
Your GP is usually the best place to start.
Speak to your GP about the mental health difficulties you are experiencing, the treatment you have already received and why you feel you may need more specialist support.
You can ask whether you can be referred to your local Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) or another appropriate secondary mental health service for an assessment.
From our experience, we have had less success where requests for NHS funding for private mental health treatment have been pursued through a GP alone.
The aim at this stage is therefore usually to access the appropriate NHS mental health service, where a psychiatrist or other mental health professional can assess your needs and consider whether specialist trauma treatment may be appropriate.
Once you are under an appropriate NHS mental health team, you can discuss Khiron with them and follow the funding pathway above.
Take information about Khiron to your NHS team
We have created a Khiron NHS Referral Guide that you can download and share with your GP, psychiatrist, CMHT or other NHS mental health professional.
It provides information about Khiron Clinics, our specialist trauma treatment programmes, clinical approach and outcomes, as well as our experience of NHS-funded treatment and the ICBs that have previously funded treatment at Khiron.
