Is Adult Depression Linked To Childhood Trauma?

Trauma is an impactful experience in life. Whatever our trauma is, however our trauma comes to be, we are changed forever as a result of it- cellularly, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Traumatic experiences transform our genetics and alter the way some of our basic mechanisms work, namely our sympathetic nervous system. Such an instantaneous transformation has long term effects. In the trauma treatment arena, we are extremely keen to the idea that trauma can be a core origin source for innumerable mental as well as physical illnesses from the moment of trauma impact and beyond in life. More and more, academic and research communities are validating what we treatment providers have been aware of for quite some time. Trauma manifests in a number of ways. Without intervention and treatment, the effects of trauma can last a lifetime.

A most recent study has discovered a genetic link between childhood emotional trauma and adult depression. According to Psychiatric Times, “Adults with MDD [major depressive disorder] reportedly have double the incidence rate of early life adversity (ELA) compared with healthy persons…Researchers are now exploring whether MDD in adulthood may be a latent symptom of an epigenetic alteration related to the impact of ELA on neurodevelopment.”

Trinity College Dublin in Dublin Ireland is associated with this new insightful research on making a genetic connection. Through a complex study of the brain looking into “the mechanisms of potential pathologic epigenetic modulation of the HPA axis as a basis for MDD,” the team found that the genetic alterations can act as a great stepping stone toward better understanding depression. Studies like these open a door to progressing the diagnosis, treatment, and healing of depression.

Childhood emotional trauma or any kind of childhood trauma creates a high level of deregulated stress in the mind and the body. Coping with high levels of stress is not what young children are yet equipped to do physically or mentally because of their lack in mature development. As a result, the stress lives inside of their bodies, causing various disorders and diseases to develop. With treatment and therapy, however, the symptoms of depression can not only be alleviated, but put into remission entirely, making a healthier lifestyle of recovery wellness available to everyone.
